Five of the most unique places to stay in Berlin

By Becky Padmore

1. Ku Damm 101 - This hotel is funky, futuristic and fashionable but is also surprisingly reasonably priced. A popular hotel its rooms and striking lobby are bright, spacious with some unusual features. Also in all the rooms are flat screen televisions, free wifi and a high design decor and furniture. Guest will also love the highly positioned breakfast room which offers great views over Berlin.

2. Art Noveau - A superbly decorated luxury boutique hotel which has been recently lovingly refurbished. The hotel is an elegant mix of contemporary and antique and all rooms offer high quality furniture, modern amenities and impeccable design. The beautiful bird cage lift and friendly staff also adds to the hotel's wow factor.

3. Ostel - This a fun and friendly budget hotel/hostel which is themed on the old East German days. Attention to detail is key to this place's success and much of the furniture originated before the fall of the Berlin wall. Mixing kitsch with function and comfort rooms and the lobby feature quirky touches such plastic flowers, lurid retro wallpaper and large transistor radios.

4. MichelBerger - Located in the lively district of Friedrichshain is 119 individually rooms in an old factory building converted into a truly unique hotel. Edgy and artistic the hotel was created by an open minded group of friends. Relaxing with a gritty edge you will marvel at the decoration which includes recycled fixtures and fittings including walls and lampshades made of books. If you decide to stay here bring your camera!

5. Propeller Island Hotel - Propeller Island Hotel is probably the nearest thing you can get to staying overnight at an art gallery. Extraordinary, surreal but never seeming to take itself too seriously, Propeller Island is one of the world's most unusual hotels. All the rooms have a one-off theme created by a German artist although some rooms are more user-friendly than others. Stay here and you can find yourself sleeping in a green-padded cell, an elevated cage or even a coffin.
